Revelation

My aunt, who lives just outside of Portland, Oregon, told me that one of her neighbors told her that Barack Obama was the anti-Christ. She thinks the comment was meant fairly seriously, and in any case felt too intimidated to reply.

I told her that she should have pointed out that the anti-Christ would be doing better in the polls (“And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life” [Revelations 13:8]).

George W. Bush promised that he would be a uniter as a president, but he failed. I wonder if it is possible for anybody to be a uniter for the U.S. these days.

Bush didn’t fail. He succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest dreams (even The Onion’s) at what he set out to do — at everything except demolishing Social Security. That his goals were not yours or mine we knew going in. The cost to the nation is large but not his problem, and the cost to his party is large, but temporary. In the meantime he transferred many billions of dollars directly from the treasury to his friends’ wallets, drove trillions from fuel-buyers’ pockets to his friends’, ensured further decades of instability in the mideast, sabotaged alternative energy, got Americans used to giving up consitutional rights, and trained tens of thousands of young men in kicking down doors and threatening people with machine guns.

If only any of us could have such a large effect on the nation.
